In the Washington, DC area, there is a beach with this sculpture in the sand called “The Awakening.” I imagine it is a visitor from the Greek pantheon of Gods, turned to stone whilst observed by mere mortals such as me so I don’t get alarmed. It stays still forever, but then forever to me may be a wink of an eye to this ancient. Is it sinking or rising or merely trying to be unobtrusive? Is the awakening from a nightmare or a restful sleep? What happens once it is fully awake? Or are we the ones to be awakened? Is the awakening meant to be for a moment or forever? Pema Chödrön wrote: “Everything in our lives has the potential to wake us up or to put us to sleep. Allowing it to awaken us is up to us.”
(This sculpture used to be located in DC but has been moved to the National Harbor, just outside of DC.)
