With the devastating earthquake, Nepal has been in the news. So much hardship has befallen that country since my visit long ago. I remember Nepal. I actually enjoyed the street vendors there. While I may or may not have purchased, I have fond memories of rich conversations. The vendors seemed to be keenly aware of living for the day and seeking joy in whatever life presented. The welcoming kindness shown to me by people there has yet to be matched anywhere.
I remember the joy of the wedding parades; the young boy gifting me with a flag; the young man welcoming me with a white scarf; the kindly rangers bantering around the campfire; the group of men huddled around our flat tire, at first shocked and then rolling with it, when I joined in their conversation; the shop keeper telling me what a Mandala meant to him; the elephant keeper talking about his respect for the elephant–all with smiles. May they recover.
One option for donations is the Nepal Earthquake Children’s Relief Fund.
