“I had been told that a local fairy creature in Japan was the Tanooki so I should look for him. That was a good thing because the tourist places didn’t mention him. This is what I was told:
Tanooki is a beaver with big testicles who wears a large cap with a visor. The story is that a dragon got a merchant in trouble and was going to kill the merchant because the merchant couldn’t pay his debts to the dragon. This beaver came from the forest and got the dragon drunk on sake. While the dragon was drunk, our beaver hero altered the dragon’s books to wipe out the merchant’s debts.
I did see some wooden statues of Tanooki that I wouldn’t have noticed if I had not been looking.” from Chapter 8 of Tattoo—Journeys on My Mind
